I have a question for bear hunter. If a bear is hitting the bait in the early morning hours say like 2:30 am. Is there a way to get them to come in durning shooting times. Do you withhold the the food and set it out only durning shooting hours or what. He is a big boar approximately weight of 500 pounds. Any ideas, Thanks.

I made so much bait, (doughnuts) and sugar sprayed area, right on the tree line of where the bear would normally be... The I baited so much on certain days that he couldn't finish it even with 3 of his bear buddies, 500 lbs of doughnuts... then the bear was seen right before dark, and still in early morning. also adding more cover to the area you are baiting, such as more protection for the bear, so he feels more in home and less vulnerable. too bad I can't bait anymore here in washington state. Good Luck Brandon L. Walker

Boy, this is tough. I've read that you can condition a bear using an ATV. A typical bear will lay in the brush near the bait pit and come and eat when it's hungry. This bear is an old smart bear that is conditioned to eat at night. Most likely had human contact of some type. Did you scare the bear off at anytime when you brought baits out. Here's what I've read about conditioning. You bring baits out on an atv. The bear gets used to the sound of the machine and learns that the noise means food is comming out to the pit. Soon after you leave on the atv, the bear will come to the pit. You need two people to do this. Keep your baiting times consistent. Start the process and after a week or so, have a friend drive you out to the site, refresh the bait, you get to your stand and the friend drives away. If the bear has been conditioned, it may come to the pit right away. I've never done this, just read about it.
