I live in Texas and have the good luck of being able to put a lot of time in the field during hunting season. For years I used a Browning A Bolt in .270 Winchester with great success but hated getting that pretty ole gun dirty, dinged and wet.Last year I purchased an Armalite AR 10 with a match stainless barrel and put a Leopold Vari X 3 4.5/14X50 scope on it. I've used it to take a 2 deer (all 1 shot), 6 wild hogs (all 1 shot) and quite a few coyotes since then. But here is my problem, most of the people that see me pull it out of my truck think I'm a little abnormal for using an 'assault' rifle to hunt with. Some have even gone as far as to tell me I have 'to much gun' for what I'm doing. This is while their taking there .338 or 300 Weatherby Mag. out to shoot a doe at 100 to 150 yards. Am I the only 'abnormal' person out here using my .308 'assault' rifle to hunt with?

Bobby, Glad you're getting some real use out of your fine selfloading rifle. I know a fellow who owns a room full of fine rifles but hunts only with his trusted HK91, one shot, one deer, every year since 1980-something. Anyone else complains tell them 'pretty is as pretty does.' Good hunting! Michael

I have a safe full of rifles, but the one I seem to grab the most is my Springfield Armory M1A National match. I have been using it for over 15 years and it will still put 3 rounds in 1/2 inch at 200 yards. Yes, it's heavy and ugly, but it is still my favorite.

I don't see a problem with having a AR-10 or a AR-15 in the field as long it is on single shot. Both AR-15 and deer rifles are made to hit a target, if the round is big enough for the job what the problem? It all depends on what your comfortable with. Oh yeah there is no reason have a clip with more then 5shot max. when deer hunting.
If you want to get some funny looks bring out a m60

The problem with taking a so called 'assault weapon' to the field to go hunting is that there is a minority element of irresponsible and unethical hunters who think it is cool to do the 'spray and pray' thing instead of taking a single well-aimed shot to make a clean one-shot kill. The 'spray and pray' hunters are the 'abnormal' ones. Because of the irresponsible behavior of a few, a prejudice has developed against all who would go hunting with a so-called 'assault weapon'. You are being stereotyped and viewed with prejudice. Just because people are prejudiced against you doesn't necessarily mean that you are abnormal.

The civilian use of military weapons for hunting is a highly suspect activity. It is prefectly bad manners for one thing.
Using dynamite to fish is also a little outrageous in a particularly vulgar sort of way.
The most advantageous way to go hog hunting is to use Soviet surplus land-mines. That certainly separates the boys from the arrest warrant.

A .308 is still a .308 regardless of what it is fired from. You are playing into the hands of the anti-gun crowd when you say the appearance of a gun means it is unsuitable for hunting. By the way, I would absolutely love to have a .308 by Armalite. I have wanted one for years. How do you like that

Lissieux stated 'It is prefectly bad manners' refering to the use of military look alike rifles to hunt. Is that according to Emily Post or some other authority? Will I find a reference for this in my local library?
The only autoloading rifle I have is a .22 Ruger. However, it is pretty presumptious to make such a presumptious statement.
