Not sure about hunting pre-rut on the Island. I normally hunt first part of November where rattling works well. Which part of the Island are you hunting? as the deer migrate to the shore as winter/snow approach's. I would be prepared to get into the thick stuff and find the deer as they don't seem to move that much when it is still warm. Couple of our guys had luck with the deer in a can product last year so keep that as an alternative to rattling. Be prepared for a couple of approach's and ask the guide what works best for that time of year.
Last year was a fantastic hunt in November with a couple inches of early season snow and lots of deer. If you go again then try later in the year than october.
Remember to sort of the USDA forms ahead of time if you intend to bring back the meat and antlers (no heads). Also call ahead to your intended US port of entry to see that they are open to check any deer you bring back. Most seem only to be open during normal office hours to process incoming game.
Good luck - 5 weeks to go
