I lived on Adak for two years in the late seventies as a USN meteorologist. Hunting caribou there is like walking up to a dairy cow and putting a bullet through its head. They had no fear. We would simply take the tug around to the Bay of Waterfalls, hike about 1/2 mile dragging a couple sleds, get within about 30 yards of the herd, take our shots, quarter the meat, load the sleds, hike back to the tug, go back to the base, and get the cooks to carve it up for us. The meat is very lean. Good for stew only if you add a bit of bacon. We'd be eating bou burgers for months.
There might be trophy animals out there, but there would be no sport in taking them.
The fishing and waterfowl hunting on the other hand is fantastic. Try Lake Andy. But watch out for the Bald Eagles. They start circling as soon as you set up. Quite often they would claim a kill before you could get to it.
I had a WW II quanset hut out by Thumb Bay. My buds and I would spend our liberty out there just relaxing. I've never seen so many stars in my life.
In winter the sun comes up at about 9:30 and sets at about 3:30. In summer, first light starts at about 3:30 and sunset is close to 10:30 with true darkness only from 12:30 to 3:00. Something like that. The island's at 56 degrees N latitude.
