I was wondering if someone out there could answer this question: Why can't a bow hunter use mechanical broadheads on moose and brown/grizzly bears? He can on black bears, caribou, and other game. They have a bigger cutting radius, so what gives. The only thing I can come up with is that there is a margin of error of them not opening up. Anyone else?

Thanx,

A bowhunter can use mechanical broadheads on moose and brown bears, but there is one thing to remember. There have been problems with mechanicals either failing to open or the blades snapping off. Do you really want to risk hunting large and/or dangerous game with something that might or might not work?

I can't imagine going grizzly hunting with a bow anyhow, mechanical broadheads or not. Not unless I had some firearms to back me up!

Like throwing a tiny piece of lead at them that could be deflected by the tiniest branch, changing it from a kill shot to an irritating graze, or flinging a insignificant carbon or aluminum shaft at them from a weapon primitive people stopped using hundreds of years ago ?

If there's no risk, there's no fun .

I don't know about the lower 48, but I've heard that bow hunting for Alaskan Brown Bears has a requirement of a backup person with a gun.

Bow hunting for an Alaskan Brown Bear is on my list of 'sometime in my lifetime' list (like other people have 'climb Mt. Everest'.

There's a big difference between an accidental deflection and starting out deliberately handicapped. Hunting dangerous/large game with a bow is risk enough in and of itself. That I don't have a problem with and have plans to do that exact thing. But I would be using a good quality, proven broadhead like a Muzzy (or the equivalent). I have heard too many horror stories about mechanical broadheads failing to open on impact or breaking up on hitting bone to risk using them.

I feel that everyone owes it to the animal to do everything in their power to make a quick and efficient kill. To hunt dangerous game with marginal equipment is not only foolhardy (and borderline suicidal) but irresponsible.

But that's only my opinion, and that's what this group is about, sharing opinions and experiences.

The game regulations state that bowhunters can NOT use mechanicals on moose and brown bears.

I ALWAYS carry back up even if I'm just hiking and not hunting!!!

Heck, don't apologize to me. I wouldn't dream of using mechanicals on moose or bear! I like a good, durable and proven broadhead that's going to cut and stay intact each and every time I shoot it. I want to hunt moose and brown bear with a bow, but only with the proper equipment....and a good guide with a .458 behind me
