Conservative gun owners ought to be jumping all over this too. Just six months ago, the owner of Flying Cloud Trading company in Roseburg, Oregon was shot in the foot at a gun show at the county fairgrounds. At least in that case the gun was pointed in a safe direction - at the floor. In this case, the shooter was grossly negligent, and a 13 year old boy was shot in the head. I find this outrageous. If I knew who it was, I would turn them in to the cops in a heartbeat.

People getting shot at gun shows is really obnoxious. Loaded guns have no place at a gun show. If they are concerned about security, they should hire off-duty cops who presumably would have the good sense to keep their weapons safely holstered, and not to blaze away in a crowded room.

Sorry to rant, but I have no patience with idiots who can't keep their gun pointed in a safe direction.

Larry,

Not a rant to me.

I feel EXACTLY like you do.

Gun dealers might NEED their loaded weapond in their shop, but not inside a gun show.

Perhaps we can help to prevent such accidents in the future by keeping each other honest with respect to firearms safety. Stop bad habits from forming by pointing out potential safety violations as you see them happen, including to yourself. Be tactful, and be helpful.

Unfortunately, it is too late.

Pray for us. Pray also for the 'shooter'; i.e., that (s)he did not commit a chargeable offense. Pray that it was truly an accident, e.g., like a brake failure in an automobile that precipitates the death of an innocent.

Most puzzling for me in the cited article are the last two paragraphs:

'Even after the shooting Sunday, folks poured into the gun show. Some arrived with handguns strapped to their waists; others carried rifles and shotguns. Khaled Eid of Lilburn had his twin, 4-year-old boys in tow.

'The incident, he said, was yet another reason to 'get out of a sport I have loved since I was 12.' '

1. I'm at least mildly curious as to his other 'reason(s)' to 'get out of a sport I have loved since I was 12.'

2. Given that he has (an)other 'reason(s)' to 'get out of [the] sport ...', why is he attending a gun show in the first place??

3. And with his 'twin, 4-year-old boys in tow???'

I see.... So you, PERSONALLY, can GUARANTEE that a gun dealer (or anybody else, for that matter) will not 'NEED' a loaded weapon at a gun show??

I thought not.

Hmmm.... Somehow I missed the original post. To forestall a perception that I'm 'picking on' Woody:

In all probability, the cops already at the show arrived at the scene within minutes if not seconds.

Same song, different verse??

'People getting shot in public is really obnoxious. Loaded guns have no place on the streets. We have the police to protect you.' Never mind that the police have no specific obligation to protect a particular person from a particular threat.

Or:

'People getting shot in the woods is really obnoxious. Loaded guns have no place in the woods. We need to ban hunting as 'too dangerous', and allow our wildlife experts to manage wildlife populations with safer, more modern scientific techniques than killing.'

Ahh.... a quick return to logic and reason.

Banning the possession of certain objects, even only in 'certain circumstances', is at best a 'feel-good band-aid'. E.g., I cannot find a reasonable refutation of the argument that banning the possession of firearms by airline pilots in the cockpit probably cost us the World Trade Center and thousands of innocents, a wing of the Pentagon and hundreds of innocents, and four airliners with crews and passengers on Sept. 11, 2001.

'Individual responsibility for the consequences of individual acts.'

John and Chris,

I wouldn't say that I would GUARANTEE that a you all (or anybody else, for that matter) will not 'NEED' a loaded weapon in your bath tub or shower.

However -

EVERY gun show that I have ever been to there are one or two armed secuity guards at each door. That would be the last place a bad guy would want to hold someone up.They don't have that extra security luxury at their shops.

So the chances of you all (or anybody else, for that matter) will 'NEED' a loaded weapon in your bath tub or shower - OR - the dealer (or anybody else, for that matter) will 'NEED' a loaded weapon at a gunshow is slim and none and SLIM left town last week.

It was on another newsgroup that I stated that I wouldn't be opposed to the dealers not having their guns wire tied and have their clips handy, but not in the guns.

Handling loaded guns in a crowded hall should be a positive - NO-NO.

Now, I'll bet a dollar to the proverbial dough nut that the people that ran this show won't allow loaded guns anymore.
