# Sorry for the slight divagation, but I couldn't help wondering how # well (or poorly) the 7.62 x 39 would perform against the bear in the # scenario proposed by the original poster. # Sure, it does not have the versatility of a shotgun or the stopping # power of a .375 H&H Magnum, however, you get the power of a # .30-30 in a semi-auto, high capacity rifle such as the SKS (with a # 40-round mag?), which is very rugged and very precise at short ranges. # Besides, that ammo is 11 cents a round (if bought by 1,000-round # cases). # Could such a rifle with a high capacity magazine be legally carried # for self-defense purposes in that kind of scenario? # # How big can these bears be, anyway? # # R. Perri #

With all respect, your logic is faulty. Instead of one shot from a large bore gun on a Cape Buffalo, would you figure 50 .22 cals weigh more and therefore must be just as good or better? How big are they? Well, a CDC official shot a sow last year with a .270 and his half eaten parts were found covered by brush as a food stash the next day. The Coast Guard machine gun the sow for some time with military rifles to kill it. A Boar is twice as big. He was a friend of a friend is how I know, but links to the AK newspaper articles were posted in this NG contemporaneously.

Big enough. A heavy 12 gauge slug is roughly equivalent in power to a .375 H+H - really quite impressive.
