Exactly. but to explain it a bit better for Pat, 'cause I got a feeling he doesn't know what Ted and I know, a .303 British round's bullet is nowhere near .303 inches in diameter when it's still attached to the cartridge. That's just 'one of those gun things'. When you buy components, it tends to be .311, even up to the sizes Ted mentioned.

So, yes, if you're lucky, it may say .303 British on the box, but it'll be .311 inside. Same deal with 7.62x39mm bullets. They're bigger than stated, as well.

But, to answer your origional question, .303 *is* 7.696mm.

The .303 British round, however, shoots a 7.899mm diameter bullet, give or take.

I hope you're not too confused

In millimeters, a .303 British cartridge should be labelled 7.7x56R. Do NOT just go with anything labelled 7.7; I think there are other cartridges out there called 7.7 that are NOT .303 British.

What kind of ammo is it? The best milsurp .303 British around these days that I know about is South African; the headstamp will say 'A80 7.7 R1M3Z'. Beware the old 50s vintage crap that you find in a lot of the bandoliers. I don't use that stuff at all.

And those 125 grain 7.62x39 bullets shoot wonderfully well in my .303

A couple of weeks ago on this post someone said they were selling some .303 brass and reloading gear, I am very interested in purchasing these items. I am sorry I no longer have the name of the person who posted as my hard drive was zapped by a virus. If you are still reading this post, and interested in selling gear, please contact me Thanks, Patrick Buzzard
