Hi, it's me again. A sporting goods store is closing it's dorrs and selling off everything they have. Their gun prices are higher than others, but they have 20% off right now. Anyway, my rifleless brother is left-handed and found a .300 bolt action I believe. He found a 30- 06 semi-auto with synthetic stock which he didn't like. It's been two weeks since he first saw the rifle (used to be at 10% off)and it's still there. They want $479 or so, minus out 20% to be $383.20. Why is it that no one bought the rifle yet? He went just last night and said that the # of rifles is reducing. Is a .300 good for deer and hogs, and to what range?

Chris, the 300 you are talking about, if it is a 300 Savage, it is not a well know cartridge in today's world, yes it is an excellent deer caliber, just slightly below the 308 in power, but very, very close to it, the 308 has about knocked it of the market, as I think at this moment it is not being manufactured by any of the Big Four gun makers, It might be a Remington,, they made a run of these a few years back.
Back in the 40's and 50's it was a very popular round, and can kill about anything out to 400 yds or so, many elk and moose have been killed with this round, and thousands , and thousands of deer, just what ever it did, the 308 does a little better.
It was brought out in the Savage lever action as a short cartridge, capable of duplicating the original 06 military round of that era, of course they have increased the efficiency of the 06, with better powders, but due to the smaller case capacity, the 300 couldn't keep up
The ammo might be hard to find someday, but it will always be available through mail order.
I would wait until it drops another 10 % in price, or just tell them you will pay 10% less than what they are selling it for now, use the concern of finding ammo at the local Wal Mart as the reason for paying less. It will make a great hunting rifle, for deer and hogs.

If this is the 300 win mag, it is more powerful and has more range than the 30-06 also true of the weatherby 300 both of which are too powerful, if anything, for deer and hogs.. Need precision about what it is exactly to be sure.

You don'tmention the manufacturer or model of the rifle, so it may be that the gun isn't all that good a deal at $383. Also you say '.300' which I assume is .300 Winchester Mag?
If it is indeed a .300 Win Mag, it is suitable for all North American game. Unnecessarily big for whitetail deer and not necessarily the best for hogs (I would prefer a .45-70 lever action or a pump shotgun with slugs for hogs). For long range shots out west (elk, mule deer, or antelope) it is a fine choice.

(snip) Chris here. My brother bought the rifle. It's a Ruger .300 Win Mag. left-handed bolt action. He couldn't believe the price that he has to pay for ammunition compared to my .30/30 ammo. He just called me to tell me that he bought a 2.5X10X50mm scope, which is way too much as far as I'm concerned. He says that some time in the future he'll head out west, etc. to hunt the BIG game that his rifle's capable of. I'll opt to stay home and hunt deer with my .30/30. Thanks to everyone for their words of wisdom- if only I knew half of what y'all did.

Hope your brother enjoys the gun. I am a southpaw and have a 300 win mag. The only problem he may encounter beyond the cost of ammo is recoil. The ruger is fairly light and if he uses 180 grain of larger he will take somewhat of a pounding. If he is going to hunt for white tails try and get the 130s or 150 grain bullets. The recoil is somewhat reduced but will effect accuracy in a recoil sensitive shooter. Best of Luck Tom
