30-06 ammo for whitetail deer hunting...
I'm trying to decide on a load for whitetail season this year. I live in maine and hunt in a hilly area. The rifle that I will be hunting with is a M1 Garand. I was looking at Remington Swift Scirocco Bonded 150 grain rounds, then at Winchester Partition Gold, and then at Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip (150 grain). I'm trying to use the same weight ammo that I plink with that way I won't have to do much resighting (which is 150 grain boattail FMJ). Any suggestions? Thanks.

gonna hump that Garand into the deer woods? Use whatever shoots good in your rifle - try it out. Some plain old 150gr Core-Lokts will kill the deer as dead as anything else

Ass/u/me that you are from the Dallas TX area and will be hunting the smaller WT's we have down here, I'd opt for the Ballistic Silvertips, it doesn't require a whole lot of penetration on 140 pound deer. And especially if you are hunting where you get alot of deer in one small area-ie. feeder or planted grazing. John

Do not use Partition Gold, it's moly coated and loaded too hot. Most factory loads will be a bit hot for the M-1, so use them sparingly. The 150gr. Rem Core Lokt Ultra would likely be effective on game. Stay away from any of the 180gr. loads, as they may not have pressure curves compatable with your gun.

Dallas, Why not keep it simple and affordable? First try the plain vanilla Remington Corelokt, Winchester PowerPoint, Federal HiShok, etc. of the 150 grain spitzer variety. If you encounter a deer that won't lie down and become venison after taking one of these through the boiler room you can try some of the spendy stuff. Be sure to check your state hunting regulations to see if you need to send away to Brownells for a reduced capacity clip. Good hunting! Michael

I'm no M1 expert..but I do know that you don't need to use premium bullets in the /06 to take whitetails...

I'd go with Core-Lokt , Silvertips, Game Kings or Interlocs. They've worked perfectly for decades and will continue to do so.

Yeah, I need five round mags for it, but I've already found them at sportsmansguide.com. They sell them five for $25. Thanks for the tips on the ammo.

Dallas

PS: For anyone who cares, I'm not from texas, I'm from maine

Good idea to hunt with same ammo you plink with, so do yourself a favor and make sure you re-zero your sights with any change in components. It doesn't matter what bullet/ammo you use if you miss. Hunt safe, shoot straight.
