2009 Idaho Dove Outlook

The dove population in Idaho appears to be good this year. In speaking with Fish and Game officials, they report that the population is fine and there have been no declines. My personal observations confirm this, as I’ve noticed good numbers of both Mourning and Eurasian Collared doves.

I was becoming concerned over this year’s hatch back in June, since it was the wettest in decades and the cooler wet weather can be deadly to spring hatches. However since the dove hatch did well, that’s encouraging for other upland game birds. I’ll be posting the outlook on other game birds as information is received.

It’s not too early to start getting ready for hunting season. If you haven’t been working with your dog this past summer, start doing some refresher training, exercising (both yourself and your dog), and be very aware of the heat especially for your dog.
