Jazzy,

The TC carbine in .223 would fit your description to a 'T'! It's small, light, low recoil, surplus ammo everywhere, and really fun to shoot.

Also, a 20 ga. slug is adequate to harvest a white tail.

: I need a rifle with a short stock. I'm 5' even and don't weigh : very much. I want a small caliber rifle that is cheap to shoot, has a : longer effective range than a .22 win mag and is drilled for a scope. I : would like one with minimal recoil. If its a non bolt action single shot : my boyfriend will buy it for me. If its lever or pump action he will pay : for half and if its bolt action or simi auto he will not pay for any of : it. I'm thinking of a Thompson Center Contender Carbine in .22 Hornet, : but I don't know how big the hornet is. I will mainly use it for : varmints (coyote/feral dog) and the occasional marauding pop bottle Any : help would be appreciated.

: I also would like to know if a 20 ga slug (if put in the right : place) could make a clean kill on white tail?

: Jazzy

I gotta ask. Why all the restrictions on the type of gun you'll can buy? Seems to me you should get whatever fits you and that you can shoot well

The Encore is not offered in 22 hornet. It is offered in 223Remington. There is plenty of ammunition available, and usually it's inexpensive. Comparison: 22 Mag, 33 or 40 gr bullet, velocity at barrel 1900-2000fps, energy 293 - 324. 22 Hornet 45 grain bullet, 2690fps, 723 on the energy. 223 50-62 gr bullet, 3000-3300fps, 1209- 1282 on the energy at the barrel. If your interested in deer hunting consider the .243 with a 100gr bullet. Energy at 300yrds is 1149. Low recoil, accurate. If your thinking of fun shooting most of the year and deer hunting in the winter, I'd go with the .223 and .243. http://www.tcarms.com/encore/index.html

Very good choice in a firearm! Great gun! Rethink the .22 Hornet though (I am a fan of the Hornet) Here in Pennsylvania a box of .22 hornet (50 rounds) is about 20-22 bucks. Get a .223. Much cheaper to shoot and it will shoot out to 300+ yards. Also it has very low recoil.

The 20 ga slug brings plenty of whittails down every year.

The Hornet is an old-time cartridge that has a little more poop than the .22 Magnum rimfire. It's sufficient for mercy shots. The 223 NATO is a full metal jacket army cartridge that's just right for woodchucks. An ideal cartridge for dogs is the 22-250 Rem., a lot more fire and fury than the 223. The Contender is a good choice. You can tinker with all the componants until you get something that's just right for you

Explain to us, please, his rational on what he will buy, what he won't buy, I'm far more fascinated by those statements than I am the rest of your dilemma. Yes, the Hornet will work fine for what you want. So will a .222, a 17 Remington, or a .223. The TC is good. It's short and it will work fine. For a BOLT gun, try the CZ527 in .22 Hornet.

My understanding is that a 20 gauge slug will equal the power of a 454

The .22 hornet is very mild, and good for coyotes and other vemin. The .223 rem is more common though, I don't even know if you can get hornets over the counter, but 223 is common as dirt nowdays. Look at New England Firearms Handi-rifle, they're alot of rifle for the price, and come with a Weaver type scope base already attached. You can also buy other barrels for a very good price too. My wife is very recoil sensitive, and shot my .223 handi rifle with no complaints at all, she was also shooting from the bench which tends to increase felt recoil. They're too light for hard kickers like 30-06, I don't even like shooting it with that barrel. A 20 gauge should do great on whitetails, but you might want to look at getting another barrel for the handi rifle or TC rifle in something mild like 30-30 or .243 win. It would be more acurate, and less recoil than the 20 gauge. I think the 30-30 only comes with iron sights though, and the comb of the stock is too high for iron sights, but the shotgun stock with the lower comb is only $20 including shipping. Or just buy the scope mount and put a scope on it instead.

My newbie $.02 worth: Savage 110 bolt in .243 for critters/varmits and those pesky pop-bottles (plastic I hope!) Savage 110m (or is it M110) 20ga 'slug-gun'

The 243 comes in a youth model/shorter stock that my 13yr old grandson can handle beautifully. I have only read about the slug-gun but the reports were glowing.

YMMV

well jasmine for my .o2 $ you cant go wrong with bolt or single shot riflein cal.22mag to 22-250 for coyotes and feral dogs depending on shot placement ,and range, if most of your shots are longer range +150 yds or so go with a slightly larger cal such as 22-250 0r 223 if they are under 100 yds 22 mag should be fine . i personally use a 22-250 ruger m-77 with a 3x9 variable ,it does the job cleanly out to 250 yds or so
