Can I get some opinions on using a 12 gauge (with slugs) for hunting Black Bear?

Check with your State Fish & Game or Hunting Dept. Measure the Kinetic Energy (knock down power) of the bullet or slug you want to use:

For Example, these are averages from PMC ammunition:

1. .375H&H 4210-4937 ft-lbs. 2. 8mm mauser 2102 3. 00 buckshot 1325 4. 12ga slug 1600 5. 7.62x39 soviet 1600 6. .454 Casull 1813-1924

Slugs are usually recommended for Deer. You definitely have to have more knock down power to take down a bear. Most handgun hunting books say that .454 Casull is recommended for hunting bear. So, you should have Kinetic energy greater than 1813 ft-lbs. Do the Math, enjoy the hunt

Look at the Hunting game regulations in your state. Personally, I would use a rifle with a Safari Caliber such as .375 H&H and up, or if you like a Big Game revolver...use .454 Casull. Taurus and Ruger make good Big-game hunting revolvers. good luck

I would suggest you consider using a rifle rather than a shotgun unless you are only about 30 feet away from the bear, grin.

Its a shame you guys dont hunt black bear. Maybe you need a math news group. A cheap old box of 12ga lead foster slugs, for under $3, will kill every damn black bear you hit, as long as its in the boiler room. Hit him in the ass and he'll run for 3 states, and then you can blame the numbers.

Del,

I'm not sure what your message is...? Where do you get slugs for under $3 a box? I'll buy 'em. 12ga. slugs are effective within a relatively short range. Do you recommend shooting beyond 50 yards for black bear? 100 yards? Is this for rifled barrels, or smooth-bores?

I agree that arguments over numbers are often pointless, but the original question concerned a 'newbie' hunter with a smooth-bore (I.C. choke), wanting to hunt bear.

Where is the 'boiler room'? Are you talking about a heart-lung shot? ....carry on. noah

To email me, please remove the 'FISH' from the net.
